This is not the cocktail that I wanted to accompany my post on Ulrich Franzen. Did you miss the post on Ulrich Franzen? Check it our here.
What we want to drink, (just like what we want to eat) is influenced by many things: palate, season, and yes, our emotions. I wanted to post a classic American Fall cocktail, like a Smokey Old Fashioned to accompany Ulrich Franzen's gorgeous folly in the Berkshires. But that American classic just doesn't feel right for these times. So here we are.
The End of Days. This cocktail is basically a more potent version of a Campari Radler- which is Campari added to a German grapefruit beer. The proportions are basically 1:1:1 of Tequila, lime juice and Campari with 3/4 measure of sweetener. The recipe also calls for an IPA, but since neither Mr. Don't Bruise the Booze nor I like IPA, I used lager. The original recipe also uses just slightly more beer than spirits, but I recommend simply topping off the drink with some beer for a more balanced and refreshing cocktail suitable to enjoying the view from the ship deck 3/4 oz tequila
3/4 oz. lime juice
3/4 oz. Campari
1/2 oz Demerara Syrup (I didn't have Demerara syrup, so I just substituted Agave syrup)
Combine all ingredients in a shaker and fill with ice. Shake and strain into a highball glass with ice. Top the rest of the glass with beer and garnish with dried fruit or fresh grapefruit slice.
