The perfect cocktail to enjoy while reading about the architecture and crime of Adolf Loos.
Although we didn't splash out $295 for an old fashioned glass designed by Adolf Loos, we chose to feature a cocktail using a wlanut liqueur from Austria, where he spent most of his life.
Nux Alpina is a grape brandy that has been infused with green walnuts, which is a traditional brandy style found in many countries of the former Austro-Hungarian empire (Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovenia). Seeing as Adolf Loos was born in Brno in the Czech Republic, it seemed appropriate to make a cocktail with this delicious, spirit. The Wintry Mix combines Nux Alpina with spicy bitters and of course, our old standby Rye. As the days grow short and the darkness grows heavy, so does our dependence on Rye to get us through. It.
The Wintry Mix 3⁄4 oz Rye
3⁄4 oz Nux Alpina
3⁄4 oz Cynar
3⁄4 oz Sherry
Orange peel
Combine the above in a mixing glass and stir until well chilled. Strain into an old fashioned glass with a single large cube and garnish with an orange peel. Absolute heaven.

Nux Alpina is a liqueur made by Distillerie Purkhart in Austria. It's made from double distilled grape brandy that is infused with green walnuts, herbs and spices. Traditionally, green walnuts are picked in early summer, split in half , then placed in a large crock covered in alcohol, which is then sealed and left out in the summer sun for months. The infusion is then strained, flavored with citrus and herbs, sweetened, and brought down to drinkable proof.
